Mary Jones and her Bible

Mary Jones was a young girl living deep in the Welsh countryside who longed for her very own Welsh Bible. As a young child she started to save for one by doing all sorts of little jobs. It took six years to save enough to buy a bible. She walked through the hills for 26 miles in order to receive it. Her determination inspired people to set up what is now Bible Society today. They translated the bible into many different languages making it possible for people all over the world to read the Bible in their own language.

Later in life she continued to look after children in an orphanage in Taiwan.

The Pilgrim Fathers: their South Yorkshire origins

In 1620 around 50 extraordinarily courageous men and women set off for an uncertain future from the south of England in a ship called the Mayflower. They survived storms and after 66 days they arrived at Cape Cod on the east coast of America. They moved to a harbour nearby and set up a colony called New Plymouth. Native Americans helped them survive the very severe first winter. They became known as the Pilgrim Fathers as they had left Europe to find a place where they could practise their faith in safety. After many trials and hardships they succeeded and set the foundations of the present United States.
